According to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) published by Yale University, in 2008, Latvia was the 8th greenest country in the world (out of 163 countries analyzed in this research). In 2010, we were a bit lower - the 21st. homo ecos: believes Latvia has very real chances to become the greenest country in the world.
The 2008 EPI offers a composite index of current national environmental protection efforts. Recognizing that on-the-ground conditions are the ultimate gauge of environmental performance, the EPI focuses on measurable outcomes that can be linked to policy targets and tracked over time. For the past 2 years, the results of the EPI are published online.
There are 25 criteria analyzed about each country – strongest points of Latvia are biodiversity and air effects on ecosystem, whereas the weakest point is environmental health and environmental burden of disease.
