How to recognize eco-food?
„Bio” and „are” the new buzzwords. So how can I know that the product I buy in the shop or market really corresponds to this word? Is it really possible? Answer is – yes! Organic food can be recognized by different sertification systems.
Green market in Latvia
Ecolabel for food which certifies that a certain product is produced in Latvia with organic farming methods, without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, and it complies with the Latvian Organic Agriculture Associations’ developed certification standard. Food product standards are kept under the control of independent certification institutions, which have received an accreditation for doindgthat.
Euroleaf
Ecolabel for food which certifies thata a certain product is produced in EU with without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, and it complies with the regulation of EU biological agriculture. Since July 2010 this ecolabel is obligatory for all pre-packaged organic food products produced in an EU Member State, including Latvia and it corresponds with certain standards.
Green spoon
Ecolabel for for food product which certifies, that 75% of product content is cultivated in Latvia. This mark has nothing to do with organic food and biological agriculture, since it was created with the aim to promote Latvian-made food product and the development of agriculture, regardless of whether the foods are cultivated using environmentally friendly methods or not.
Nature product
These and similar labels have been given to the products by producer of the product rather than an independent third party certification institution. In most cases this is done in order to increase its sales. This is not an eco-label.
