The experiment of the "green" plastic
One of the most cheerful and useful ways how to become acquainted with the "green" plastic is to make it by yourself!
Yes, indeed, it is possible to make a biologically degradable plastic at home – it is cheap and simple. There are instructions below for making a pellucid, glass similar plate which can be used for small photo frames or as a replacement of glass or plexiglas.
There is no need for any safety activities, only usual precautionary measures while cooking. Surely children can make the experiment only by the presence of adults!
- Mix 12,0 g (4 tspn) gelatin with 240 ml (1 c) 1 % glycerol solution. (1 % glycerol solution doesn’t mean that there is 10 ml glycerol on every liter of water or that there are 2 tspn. glycerol on every quart of water.) Glycerol is available in drugstores. Gelatin of course has to be without spices.
- Mix it up. When it seems that it is not possible to achieve further dispersion of ingredients heat up the mixture to 95 °C temperature or to the first bubble (it depends on what is the first). Mix it again. There can be no visible clots in the mixture.
- Pour the mixture carefully on a non-sticking frying-pan with a size circa 25 cm x 15 cm. If it is necessary you can disperse the mixture so it covers all the surface of frying-pan.
- Dry it narrowly. The drying time depends of the room temperature and humidity. Just let the frying-pan stay calmly while everything gets dry. It can take several days.
Increasing the plasticity conducive additive glycerol you can also get more flexible plate.
Have a successful experiment!
