Climate change is caused by an increased concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. Human activities are the main reason that emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gases are rising. In order to avoid irreversible changes to our climate, we must make sure that the average global temperature does not exceed an 1.5-2° Celsius increase compared to the averages recorded before the Industrial Revolution (mid-19th century). This will mean limiting our collective emissions and setting a so-called “carbon budget”. Between the years 2000 and 2100, this means we cannot exceed 2380 gigatonnes CO2.
